Initial print
Black paint is applied directly to the fish itself. The excess paint is removed by evenly dabbing with a cloth. The rice paper is laid over the fish and carefully rubbed in order to transfer the image of the fish onto the paper, like a stamp. The scales and textures of the fish are captured in this print.
Adding color
The initial print is brought to life using acrylic paint. Vibrant colors are carefully chosen and blended to re-create the life of the fish.
Details and Hanko
The eye of the fish is added along with details such as stripes, spots, or distinct patterns. The artist’s Hanko, equivalent to a signature in Japanese culture, is stamped in order to authenticate the Gyotaku.
